Our philosophy on surgery for tuberous breast deformity

At AR Plastic Surgery, we understand the uniqueness of each person’s breast anatomy. Since no two patients are the same, surgeons who operate here ensure to discuss the patient’s own preferences to ensure we develop a treatment plan that meets the patient’s needs.

Our approach foregrounds the patient’s perspective, providing customised care. Surgery for tuberous breast deformity is a particularly customised procedure, involving a variety of possible surgical methods. Many patients with this condition desire to treat the appearance of a narrow breast shape and constricted tissue, and some may desire a change in shape or volume. With the patient’s unique needs in mind, we design a surgical plan that considers the patient’s proportion, balance, and symmetry.

Due to the complexity of this procedure, we encourage patients to make their decision from an educated and fully informed standpoint. We aim to provide information about the risks and recovery, and help you to manage expectations. Using customised surgical techniques, our goal is to support patients throughout their surgery, including post-operative assessments and appropriate aftercare to support recovery.

Different methods of Tuberous breast deformity surgery

Breast augmentation mammoplasty

This approach may be useful for patients who are concerned about breast volume. A lack of breast volume, especially in the upper pole, is a common concern for those with tuberous breasts, which we can treat with various augmentation (mammoplasty) techniques. For example, a patient may choose to get breast implants or, alternatively, fat grafting to the breasts.

Breast lift (mastopexy)

This surgery is common for patients with tuberous breasts, as it facilitates a reshaping and repositioning of the breasts. The technique may be useful in the case of asymmetry or laxity, and it can be combined with other methods to address lower-pole breast constriction.

Breast reduction mammoplasty

This method may be applicable to patients who seek to reduce their breast volume as part of their unique treatment plan. It may be combined with other techniques to reshape the breasts according to the patient’s desired results.

Understanding tuberous breast deformity surgery

Surgery for tuberous breast deformity is a highly personalised procedure. The condition normally develops in puberty and leads to an irregular breast shape, such as a constriction of the base and a conical shape.

The particular characteristics and severity of the condition, along with the concerns of the patient, will dictate the exact methods used. For example, the patient may be concerned about asymmetry, lack of breast volume, or an irregular nipple shape. Also, we must consider whether the condition is Grade I (mild), Grade II (moderate), or Grade III (severe), which may affect the extent of the procedure.

The goal of the procedure is to customise our approach to the patient. In your private consultation, we will assess your condition and discuss which options may be possible in your case, what they would involve, and the realistic expectations. We aim to address the breast size, shape, symmetry, and proportion, all with consideration for the patient’s preferences and cosmetic desires.

Suitable candidates for tuberous breast deformity

A suitable candidate for this procedure is one who is seeking a customised procedure to treat the appearance of tuberous breasts. Since the procedure is usually not a medical necessity, patients are often seeking surgery for cosmetic reasons, to change the shape and appearance of their breasts.

Patients should be at a healthy body weight before seeking surgery, and should not be planning to become pregnant in the future. This is because pregnancy and weight fluctuations can impact the results of surgery. Candidates should also be non-smokers, as smoking can negatively impact health and the healing process.

In addition, it is important to be aware of all the risks involved in your chosen surgery and to have realistic expectations of the outcomes.

A consultation and assessment allow us to develop a thorough understanding of your motivations and desires for the outcomes of surgery. This way, we can cater to you by tailoring a unique and customised plan.

What to expect on the day of the procedure

On the day of your scheduled surgery, we will advise you on how to prepare, ensuring that you are ready to proceed with your procedure. We will review your surgical plan, allowing you the opportunity to raise any questions or concerns you may have at the last minute.

The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and performed with precision according to your personalised plan. Your surgeon will make incisions and reshape the breasts, using a combination of techniques. Depending on your circumstances, the techniques may involve adjusting the shape or size of the nipples or altering the position of the breasts (mastopexy). The surgeon may remove breast tissue (reduction mammoplasty) or add volume using breast implants or fat grafting (augmentation mammoplasty).

The goal is to release the constriction of the lower breast pole, target irregularities, and encourage a breast shape and size that aligns with the patient’s preferences. After surgery, the patient will be monitored through the initial recovery and receive instructions for their at-home aftercare.

Aftercare and Recovery

Aftercare is a vital part of the recovery process, as it helps support patient healing and reduce the risks of complications where possible. Ensure that you follow all aftercare instructions to adequately encourage your body’s natural healing and recovery post-operatively.

Common aftercare includes sleeping elevated and on your back, keeping your surgical wounds clean, and supporting your healing breasts by wearing a supportive garment or surgical bra. Avoid putting pressure on your chest area, and avoid any strenuous activities like exercise or heavy lifting. However, you will be encouraged to get back on your feet for light walking, as this encourages good blood flow and supports the healing process. In addition, avoid smoking for at least six weeks post-operatively, as smoking has adverse impacts on healing.

Over the course of your recovery, you will be required to attend follow-up appointments, during which we can address any issues and monitor your progress.

Risks and complications

A key part of pre-surgery preparation is understanding the risks and possible complications associated with your chosen surgery. The risks of tuberous breast surgery include:

  • Infection at the surgical site
  • Pain and swelling
  • Bleeding and haematoma
  • Changes in breast sensation
  • Implant complications (if applicable)
  • Anaesthesia complications
  • Poor healing and scarring

Your surgeon at AR Plastic Surgery can explain these risks to you and how you can minimise them through appropriate preparation and aftercare. Our team prioritises ongoing patient support and care, helping them to weigh the risks and possible benefits to ensure their decisions are well-informed.
